University Wide Field Trip Celebrates the National Park Service Centennial

CEDAR CITY, Utah — Southern Utah University will participate in the National Park Service Centennial on August 25 with an institutional wide effort, SUU Day in the Parks.  The entire SUU community of students, faculty, and staff are invited to spend the centennial exploring the amazing parks and recreational areas surrounding campus.

“Our intentions for SUU Day in the Parks include introducing students to their new outdoor neighborhood, expand teaching and learning opportunities beyond the classroom, and to inspire meaningful experiences,” said President Scott L Wyatt.

As the University of the Parks (trademark pending) SUU recognizes the enriching educational experiences that take place in and outside of the classroom. With nearly 20 National Parks, Monuments, and Recreation Areas within a five-hour drive of SUU, there are over 100 different experiences being offered that day by trained trip leaders.

Experiences include caving in Great Basin National Park, pop-up theatrical performances in Zion National Park, painting in Cedar Breaks National Monument, wilderness medicine in Brian Head, mountain biking at Three Peaks Recreational Area and exploring the Grand Canyon. Additional activities include rock climbing, kayaking, rappelling, service projects, documentary film production, and dancing among the hoodoos.

The goal is to involve the entire SUU community by suspending classes on August 25 and encouraging students, faculty and staff to “Find Your Park”.

The university-wide field trip has been made possible due to the many partnership SUU has with the local land management agencies including the National Park Service, Forest Service, Department of Natural Resources, Bureau of Land Management, and several Cedar City businesses. The event is also sponsored by Findlay Subaru.
